What to Look for in Ute Tyres
Load Rating
Utes carry heavy loads — tools, timber, stock feed, towing trailers. Always choose tyres rated for your vehicle's maximum load. Look for LT (Light Truck) rated tyres for serious work use. An underrated tyre under load will overheat and wear out fast.
All-Terrain vs Highway vs Mud
Highway-terrain (HT) tyres are quiet and fuel-efficient for mainly road use. All-terrain (AT) tyres are the best all-rounder — great on gravel, dirt, and sealed roads. Mud-terrain (MT) tyres are for serious off-road work but are noisier on the highway. Most NZ ute owners find AT tyres the perfect balance.
Sidewall Protection
Gravel roads, farm tracks, and construction sites are tough on sidewalls. Look for tyres with reinforced sidewalls and chip-resistant compounds. Brands like BF Goodrich, Cooper, and Toyo are known for bulletproof sidewall construction.
Fuel Efficiency
Aggressive tread patterns increase rolling resistance and fuel consumption. If your ute spends most of its time on sealed roads, a highway-terrain or mild all-terrain tyre will save you hundreds in fuel costs per year compared to a chunky mud tyre.
Towing Performance
If you tow boats, horse floats, or trailers regularly, tyre choice matters even more. Higher load-rated tyres with stiffer sidewalls provide better stability when towing. Check your tow vehicle's placard for minimum tyre ratings when loaded.
Tread Life & Warranty
Ute tyres take a beating. Look for brands offering 60,000–80,000 km tread life warranties. Rotating every 10,000 km and maintaining correct pressure (especially when loaded) will maximise your tyre investment.
